From Three Schools to One Thriving Community: The Lecale Trinity Story

Two years after Lecale Trinity Grammar School was formed from the merger of three Downpatrick schools, Principal Grainne Lundy reflects on how far the community has travelled. Those early months brought real excitement alongside understandable uncertainty, as pupils, staff and families adjusted to significant change. Today, she says, there is a much stronger sense of identity and belonging as pupils increasingly see themselves as part of Lecale Trinity rather than one of its three predecessor schools. The hardest part of the journey has been honouring each school's own history while building something new together, a culture that could not simply be announced but had to be lived, day by day, through relationships and shared purpose. What has exceeded her expectations is how quickly young people embraced the change, forming friendships across every background through sport, music, drama and daily school life, matched every step by a staff team wholly committed to putting pupils first.

Looking ahead, Principal Lundy wants Lecale Trinity to be known as a school where every child is valued, challenged and inspired to achieve their best; one that genuinely lives out its motto, Faith in Every Child, so that every pupil feels they belong and that someone believes in them. She hopes this year group will leave not only as strong learners but as confident, compassionate and ambitious young adults, in a school where excellence and inclusion go hand in hand. She closes with heartfelt thanks to founding Principal Dr Fionnuala Moore, whose leadership guided Lecale Trinity through its formative years, and to the governors, staff, parents, pupils and community partners whose goodwill and determination built the strong foundations the school now stands on.
