Supporting local wildlife at DLS Junior School
Year 3 students recently enjoyed a special Dinja Waħda activity, connecting their classroom learning to the natural world around them. This session focused on robins, helping children explore and understand the lives of these familiar birds. To begin, the students listened to a story about a robin, which encouraged them to think about the bird’s experiences and habits.
Inspired by the story, the children then created their own robin crafts, combining creativity with learning. They also discovered that winter is a particularly challenging season for birds, when food is scarce and extra energy is needed to stay warm.
Eager to put their learning into action, the students made their own hanging bird feeders using coconut oil and seeds. Carefully placing them around the school orchard, they were able to provide food and support for local wildlife during the colder months.
This hands-on activity not only strengthened students’ understanding of animals and their habitats but also highlighted the importance of caring for the environment. Year 3 showed curiosity, creativity, and compassion, demonstrating that even small actions can make a big difference for nature. It was a wonderful way for students to connect with the world around them while putting their learning into practice.
Year 5 Students Explore the World of Sound
Year 5 students have been diving into the fascinating world of sound and sound waves during their Science lessons. This week, each pair of students received a tuning fork to explore how sound is created and travels. After learning the correct and safe way to use the tuning fork, the students eagerly began experimenting.
The highlight of the lesson was discovering how vibrations can move through solids. Using a tuning fork and a ping pong ball, students were able to see sound in action. When the tuning fork was struck, its vibrations caused the ping pong ball to move, clearly demonstrating how sound energy travels through solid objects.
Students were thrilled to see science in action and enjoyed the hands-on experience. Many commented on how surprising it was to see something they couldn’t normally see.
This lesson not only taught students about the science of sound but also encouraged curiosity, teamwork, and careful observation. With their enthusiasm for learning, it’s clear that Year 5 is on its way to becoming a class of young scientists, eager to explore the world around them, one experiment at a time.
A Day of Healthy Choices for Year 1 & Year 2
Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed a fun-filled day focused on learning how to stay healthy and active. The day began with an inspiring assembly where the children explored ways to keep their bodies strong and their minds happy. They discussed the importance of exercise, eating well, and making positive choices every day.
Next, Ms Melanie led the students in an energetic warm-up session, getting everyone moving and ready for a day full of activity. Following this, the children took part in a Mile Walk around the school, combining fitness with fun while spending time with friends.
Later, the students welcomed a special visitor, Ninu Bninu, who shared tips on eating plenty of fruit and vegetables and drinking milk to help their bodies grow strong and healthy. The children were engaged and excited to learn how simple habits can make a big difference to their health.
It was a fantastic day full of movement, learning, and healthy choices. Through these experiences, Year 1 and Year 2 discovered that staying active and eating well is not only good for their bodies but also makes life more enjoyable.
