Broadening horizons at De La Salle Senior School

Both students and staff at De La Salle College Senior School continue to broaden their horizons by opening themselves up to many experiences that help embrace the Lasallian values.

Volunteering

A group of Form 1 students accepted our invitation to volunteer during the Easter holidays and offered some of their free time to participate in a clean-up at St Thomas Bay, Marsascala, in a bid to protect our environment - both the land and sea.

Chess tournament

Seven students from De La Salle College Senior School demonstrated remarkable performances in a chess tournament, bringing pride to us all. Benjamin Calleja Falzon secured the top position in the Under 12 category, while Elias Aquilina and Gabriel Grech claimed the first and second spots respectively in the Under 16 category. Congratulations to these seven talented individuals.

Outdoor learning

Ms Camilleri and Ms Spiteri Cornish from the senior school attended a training course in Helsinki on the importance of outdoor learning and education. They were given the opportunity to learn about the techniques of taking the classroom outdoors and maximising learning in an outdoor setting.

They had the privilege to visit the Oodi Library, Helsinki City Museum, and Musttikamaa island, as well as other cultural activities to broaden their understanding of utilising the outdoor setting as a learning experience.

Brain based

From March 18th to 23rd, Ms. J. Grech, Ms. M. Hammett, and Ms. K. Coffi attended a Brain-Based Learning course in Dublin, exploring attention mechanisms, memory techniques, and motivation strategies. They also engaged in a European Food Fair, enjoyed an Irish Dancing Lesson, and tried their hand at hurling.

Outcomes included promoting growth mindsets, employing effective teaching strategies, understanding habit formation, utilising smartphones for organisation, exploring visual thinking, and enhancing motivation through curiosity.

Additionally, they immersed themselves in cultural activities and visited landmarks such as Powerscourt Gardens, Glendalough, and Russborough House.

Interschool Chess Tournament

The 2024 Interschool Chess Tournament took place at St Nicholas College in Dingli. This year's tournament was won by the DLS King's Army team, composed of Elias Aquilina, Gabriel Grech, and Denzil Sciberras on behalf of De La Salle College, Senior School in Birgu

Sensory adventure

Our students bravely embraced the challenge of exploring taste and smell while blindfolded. From savouring the delicate balance of fried haloumi cheese with pomegranate and honey to diving into a world of flavour combinations, each bite sparked lively discussions. It was fascinating to witness how every individual's palate danced to a unique rhythm, revealing personal favourites and the intricate ways taste buds complement each other.

Governing Board

On Tuesday April 16th, our college welcomed international delegates who are part of the PISA Governing Board event in Malta. Vet Hospitality/Home Economics teachers and students prepared some refreshments to promote our local cuisine.

Buskett

On Friday April 19th, our Form 1 students were taken to Buskett on an outing for some fun activities and 'outdoor lessons'.

Divided into different groups, the students moved around the wooded area to four different stations; English, Art, Science and Drama, guided by various educators who graciously helped out on the day. The teachers in charge of these stations organised various activities for the students based on their subject, with the theme of 'nature and care for wildlife'.

The wind did its best to spoil the day, but there were smiles and happy faces all round. A special thanks goes to the educators for their help, dedication and support.

Form 1

The Form 1 students, some with the help of parents and grandparents, came up with very creative projects about prehistory Malta and the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire, topics covered in Form 1. A big well done to all.

Astronomy

On April 25th, the Senior School Library welcomed Mr. Connor Sant Fournier, a former student of DLS College, for an engaging talk on Astronomy during the mid-day break. Prior to his presentation, he visited several classes, demonstrating the use of a telescope outdoors in the assembly area. Students' curiosity led to many intriguing questions.

Karting

Well done Miguel Grech. Miguel has been practising go karting for the last two years. In last weekend’s race, which was the third round of National championship/lame series Malta he finished third after a great performance in the final race. Well done and good luck for future endeavours

Karting success

Well done Zack Scicluna who has secured his position as frontrunner claiming victory in each event of the national karting championship 60cc GR3 category. During this race, with great skill, he also set a new track record. Well done and Good Luck for future endeavours.

Maths Trail

The Form 4 students were given the opportunity to participate in a captivating Maths Trail adventure within the historic setting of Mdina. This outing served a dual purpose: firstly, it contributed to the SEC School-Based Assessment, ensuring a practical application of their mathematical knowledge; and secondly, it aimed to infuse excitement and enthusiasm into the learning of mathematics.

Divided into groups of no more than 10, the students embarked on their journey armed with a series of tasks to complete at various spots throughout Mdina. At each location, they were tasked with gathering data by measuring lengths and conducting basic calculations on the spot.

This hands-on approach not only reinforced mathematical concepts but also offered an immersive and enjoyable learning experience amidst the ancient streets and structures of Mdina.

Soup Kitchen

“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” Mother Teresa

On Thursday 25th April, a group of Form 3 students had the chance to volunteer at the Soup Kitchen OFM - Valletta.

We thank Fr. Marcellino for the opportunity and hospitality, it surely was a memorable experience.
