Exploring the meaning of kindness at St Gerald’s

Congratulations to the St Gerald’s De La Salle College ‘Bí Cineálta’ Student Focus Group on the launch of the SGC Bí Cineálta Student Charter.

Since September, students have engaged in a series of thoughtful and meaningful discussions exploring what it truly means to “be kind” within our inclusive school community. Their insights, leadership and commitment have played a central role in shaping this important charter.

We commend Ted, Andrii, Finn, Darragh, Arfin and Clancy for their outstanding contribution to this initiative. Missing from photograph: Ted Philbin.

SGC Pop-Up Piano 2026

We extend our sincere congratulations to the exceptionally talented students who performed at our recent break-time piano concert. Their performances brought wonderful energy and enjoyment to the school, transforming an ordinary break into a truly memorable occasion.

The uplifting atmosphere created by the event had a very positive impact on student wellbeing, reminding us all of the unique power of music to inspire, uplift and unite our school community.

We are immensely proud of our students’ talent, confidence and dedication. We also acknowledge, with gratitude, the commitment of their piano teachers who continue to nurture and encourage these gifted young musicians. It was a truly fitting celebration of piano music at St Gerald’s DLS College.

SGC Senior Hurling

Our Senior Hurling team delivered an outstanding performance on January 30th, securing a superb 2-17 to 1-6 victory to advance to the Connacht Final.

The team will face Ballyhaunis Community School on February 25th in the Connacht Centre of Excellence. The determination, skill and teamwork displayed throughout the match were a credit to the school, with tremendous pride shown in the SGC jersey from start to finish.

We wish the team every success in the upcoming final.

Minister Alan Dillon TD Visit

We were delighted to welcome Alan Dillon TD to the College, where he addressed our Fifth Year students in February as part of our Career Connect Programme, in association with Castlebar Rotary Club.

Minister Dillon shared valuable insights on the importance of attitude and effort, the positive influence of sport, and the value of confronting challenges with resilience and determination. His message to students was both reassuring and motivational: aim high, work diligently, remain grounded and focus on taking the next right step.

Our students greatly benefited from the experience and left feeling motivated and optimistic about their future pathways.

LCA St Brigid’s Day Crosses

In preparation for St Brigid’s Day 2026, our LCA class crafted traditional St Brigid’s Crosses. A special word of thanks to Ewan Loftus, who led the workshop and demonstrated the process with great skill and enthusiasm.

The students attended Mass on Thursday morning, where the crosses were blessed. They were subsequently distributed to staff members as a meaningful gesture celebrating community, faith and Irish tradition.

Connacht Cross Country Final

Our students represented the College with distinction at the Connacht Cross Country Final held in Bushfield, Loughrea. Competing in challenging weather conditions, including a bitter wind chill, our athletes demonstrated admirable resilience and determination.

Our Minor team achieved an impressive fourth-place finish overall. Particular congratulations to Jack Coyne on securing an excellent top-ten individual finish.

We are very proud of all who took part.

Connacht Final Winners: Senior A Football

Warm congratulations to St Gerald’s College on winning the Mezzino Connacht PPS Senior A Football Final.

Following a postponement due to inclement weather, St Gerald’s triumphed over St Muredach’s College, Ballina, in an all-Mayo Connacht Final held at the Connacht Centre of Excellence on February 20th. This achievement reflects great dedication and commitment from our players, coaches, management team, families and local clubs.

The team will now face CBS Tralee in the All-Ireland semi-final. We extend our very best wishes to the panel and management as they prepare for this important fixture.

New School Extension

We are pleased to see construction commence this week on the new multi-million euro extension at St Gerald’s DLS College.

This significant development will provide four additional classrooms, specialist rooms for Construction Studies, Home Economics and Textiles, as well as extensive upgrades designed to modernise the school and create enhanced learning spaces for both students and staff.

This project represents an important investment in the future of our school community.
