Macroom science projects benefit their community
Students from De La Salle College Macroom are using their scientific knowledge and curiosity to create projects that will be a benefit to their local and wider community.
Congratulations to Fourth Year students Peter King and Michael Kelleher on qualifying for the Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition with their project “Does water weaken UV protection in swimwear?”
Their research explores whether wet swimwear reduces UV protection — an important study for sun safety awareness. We won’t give away the results just yet… stay tuned. Well done lads.
Also, huge congratulations to Fourth Year student William Murray, who has qualified for the Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition with his project “Shrink in cattle transport and how it can best be minimised.”
William’s project takes a deep look at where weight loss in cattle transport comes from and how it can be reduced — important work that could save farmers money while also improving animal welfare.
A thoughtful, practical, and highly relevant project — well done William.
Well done to Tadhg and Patrick
Pictured here with Mayor Looney of Macroom, the lads performed beautifully at the Coffee Morning for Cancer in the Macroom FET Centre on Bowl Road.
A fantastic morning for a fantastic cause — well done boys.
Science in Action
Our 5th year students have been busy in the lab this week, getting hands-on with real biotechnology techniques.
Here we have our top scientists Billy Murphy and Sean Hennigan proudly showing off their work after successfully isolating DNA from plant tissue.
Best of luck
Wishing the very best of luck to Tiarnan O’Donohgue who will qualified for the U20 Boys category at the 123.ie National Senior & U20 Cross Country Championships in Derry. Best of luck Tiarnan - you’ve already done us proud.
Scone-tastic Work in Room 44
The boys in Room 44 swapped hammers for aprons this week and baked the most delicious homemade scones.
They learned how to mix, knead, shape, and bake — and the results were absolutely fantastic. Well done to all the boys for their excellent effort.
Christmas Crafting in Room 44
The boys in Room 44 created amazing Christmas woodwork projects this week under the brilliant guidance of Mr. Murphy.
The lads put huge effort and creativity into every detail — and the results speak for themselves. Well done everyone.
