Lasallian Research Seminar 2025: Catechesis and Announcing the Gospel

From the 20-24 of October, 2025, Brothers and Partners from around the globe gathered at the Generalate in Rome for the second Lasallian Research Seminar. This year’s focus was on Catechesis as the Institute celebrates the Year of Catechesis called for by the 46th General Chapter (2022) and the International Gathering of Young Brothers (2021).

We had two participants, Theo Arthur and Isabel Zahra, from the District attend the event which included engaging keynote speakers, practical experiences of best practices, and time for dialogue and sharing on this critical part of our Mission with young people.

Theo Arthur, Director of Spirituality at St Joseph’s College, Beulah Hill, shared this reflection on his experience.

“This year’s gathering was truly global, with delegates from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America. Participants included Brothers, chaplains, researchers, mission leaders, teachers, and catechists from places as diverse as Pakistan, South Sudan, Mexico, the Philippines, France, Spain, Argentina, Belgium, the United States, and many more. Hearing how different communities approach catechesis gave us rich insight into the challenges and opportunities young people face today.

Key reflections during the seminar focused on the need for renewed catechetical formation, especially as we work with students in an increasingly secular and multicultural world. We also explored fresh approaches, including Godly Play, a creative and reflective method for nurturing children’s spirituality.

Throughout the week, there was a strong sense of unity and purpose. Delegates repeatedly affirmed that catechesis remains at the heart of our Lasallian identity. As one speaker put it, we are called to be “apostles of the catechism”—witnesses of Christ in our schools and communities.

Returning to Beulah Hill, I feel inspired by the global Lasallian Family and energised by the commitment we share. This seminar has strengthened our resolve to continue supporting the spiritual growth of our students, staff, and families at St Joseph’s College.”

Isabel Zhara, lay chaplain from De La Salle, Malta said this about the programme.

“The seminar gathered Lasallians from around the world to deepen our reflection on the essential role of catechesis in our Mission. Inspired by the Leavening Movement and the Institute’s call to renew our evangelizing zeal, the encounter provided a meaningful space for dialogue, learning, and shared vision. This experience strengthened my understanding of catechesis as a vital expression of our commitment to universal fraternity and rekindled my dedication to accompanying others in faith with hope, authenticity, and renewed enthusiasm.”

We thank Isabel and Theo for attending the gathering and for their reflections and insights. Their experience and learning will be shared with those attending CHoRE in March 2026. More information about the Seminar can be found HERE.
