St Gerald’s visit Lasallian school in Italy
A group of 5th Years visited a DLS School in Italy on a cultural trip in October. They enjoyed a wonderful week of activities with Italian students from La Salle Istituti Filippin, Paderno del Grappa. These included historical trips, sport, Gardaland and a visit to homes of the Italian families. They look forward to welcoming our Lasallian exchange students to St Gerald’s in March.
Br Tommy’s Visit at Halloween
St Gerald’s were delighted to welcome Br Tommy and Eunan Whyte before Halloween to gift our school with copies of the new De La Salle book ‘Reflections on a Lasallian Journey’. Our esteemed guests were entertained by our school Trad Group and some students also sang for them. Their visit coincided with our Halloween Dress Up day so Mr Burke invited Br Tommy to take on the unenviable task of choosing best dressed!
Such was the array of excellent costumes our prizes were doubled to acknowledge the huge efforts on our students parts! Br Tommy was in his element! He made an excellent speech saying that the DLS Spirit was truly alive in St Gerald’s College!
Holly Jolly Harmonies
Our music department was delighted to be invited by Castlebar Concert Band to join them for their annual Christmas Concert this year! Our 6th Year Choir, 2nd and 5th year music classes and the SGC Trad Group performed brilliantly on the night. Their performances captivated the audience and marked the start of Christmas for many present! Two videos from this night were submitted for the DLS annual online carol service. We were delighted to be part of this wonderful Christmas celebration again this year.
Christmas Jumper Day in aid of St Vincent de Paul
Our annual Christmas jumper day afforded us the opportunity to showcase our spirit of community outreach by raising funds for our local St Vincent de Paul branch. Led by our amazing 6th Years, students created a great sense of seasonal cheer by wearing an array of Christmas jumpers. We gathered as a school community and sang a number of Christmas carols accompanied by our talented musicians with Christmas joy ringing out throughout the corridors of St Gerald’s!
Eoghan Jennings represents Ireland in Australian Junior Open
We were so proud to have one of our students represent Ireland at the Australian Tennis Open in January. Eoghan defeated his first opponent from Poland but narrowly missed out on a place in the tournament only after a stellar performance against his Greek opponent. Well done to Eoghan! Certainly a bright future ahead of him!
Cian Brady Handball
Fenagh Alley was a hive of activity Sunday January 18th as the Leitrim second-level schools 4-wall handball playoffs took place. We are delighted to congratulate Cian Brady, who proudly represented St Gerald’s College in the Connacht 2nd Level Schools Handball Final. Competing in the U16 competition, Cian put in a superb performance and finished 2nd place, narrowly losing out to Thomas King of Galway. A fantastic achievement and a great representation of the school — well done, Cian!
1st Year GAA Football winners of the Cian Coleman Cup
Huge congratulations to our 1st Year Football team on a fantastic victory, winning the Cian Colman Cup. Final Score: St Gerald's: 7-6 : Summerhill Sligo: 3-4. Played in Bekan, the lads showed incredible skill, teamwork and determination from start to finish — a performance to be very proud of! A big well done to the management team: Mr McLaughlin, Mr Flynn, Mr Tonra and Martin Costello for their dedication and guidance. An outstanding achievement for our First Years — the future is bright!
1st Year Trip to Sligo on Ice
Our 1st Years enjoyed a fantastic day out at Sligo on Ice which had been deferred from December due to bad weather! The students had great fun skating on the ice, sharing laughs, and spending time together outside the classroom. The day was topped off perfectly with some well-earned pizza afterwards!
Catholic Schools Week 2026
The school were very proud of the Readers, Choir, Soloists and Musicians who participated so beautifully at the 10am Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar January 21st. Their contributions enhanced the Mass greatly and were a credit to students and to our school.
Wednesday also marked Grandparents Day, and it was made extra special by the reading of a selection of heartfelt poems and prayers written by our 1st Year students. These thoughtful reflections were a wonderful tribute to grandparents and the important role they play in our lives. Well done to everyone involved.
Young Farmers Bake Sale
A massive well done to our Young Farmers Club on a hugely successful Bake Sale! Thanks to the incredible effort, teamwork and generosity of our students, over €400 was raised for Embrace FARM, an organisation that provides vital support to farm families affected by farm accidents or loss. From the outstanding organisation to the absolutely magnificent treats on display, the students did themselves and the school proud from start to finish.
A sincere thank you to everyone who baked, helped out on the day, and supported the sale. Your kindness and community spirit will make a real difference to farming families across Ireland.
